Monthly Calendar

August Reflection

3rd Grade Math Project

I always start the year with a hands-on measurement practice activity. I give my students two known lengths (one cube in an inch and a floor tile is a foot) and they have to figure out how tall they are from a piece of string we cut to their height. It’s fun to watch their wheels turn as they solve this problem of the day.

4th Grade Math Project

I wanted to get to know my students and a fun way to incorporate math is by having them think about numbers in their lives. How many letters in their name, what time they go to bed, how many pets they have, etc. We displayed these on our wall, for everyone to learn about us. Come on in and check them out!

5th Grade Math Project

We described our perfect Friday afternoon. We turned our activities into pie charts with percents of time spent doing each thing after school. TV, friends, baking, eating, playing sports, the list is endless.

6th Grade Math Project

Laurel Springs School completed a hands-on activity where the student drew an outline of their foot (learning about the origination of 1 foot as a standard unit of measurement). They put several foot imprints together to find lengths of items around the classroom. From there they were able to calculate area and perimeter.

3rd Grade Science

This month’s focus is Weather & Climate!

We are discussing the differences between the two, how to tell what each one is and what we experience each day vs over time. We have been tracking data across the country, analyzing types of weather & climate through pictures…now we get to track our own data in our very own rain gauge. We will be measuring rain fall over the next week.

4th Grade Science

This month’s focus is on Rock Patterns!

We have been studying rock patterns around the globe. Through observation we can identify what happened years ago. They tell a story of what lived in each layer. Fossils, plants, and sea creatures can show us that layers were once under the sea shifted upwards during earthquakes and volcanic eruptions to the surface for us to find and explore.

5th Grade Science

This month’s focus is Earth’s Rotation!

We are learning through observation how our position on the globe effects our shadow throughout the day. The location of the Sun’s rays are more intense along the Equator and the length of day and night change throughout the year. We have tracked daylight data throughout the year, made out own sundials, and used our science notebooks to show what happens in our sky.
