Picture Day

Picture day will be Monday, September 10, 2018 starting at 8:00 am. . We will be having our class photos around 10:30 am. Students who are scheduled for Friday do not need to have their parents present. If your child is not scheduled to come on Friday, parents are still welcomed to come and have their child’s picture taken, however, they would need to stay with their children. No money is due at this time. We do have a new system for the pictures that we will disclose on a separate email.

Eye/Ear/Dental Screenings

On Monday, September 17, 2018 we will be having the Santa Clara County Healthier Kids Foundation will be coming in to do a screening of our students. There is a consent form that needs to be signed. There will be no actual work done on the students-just a screening. For example, they take pictures of the students eyes to help determine a child’s visual reading. We will let you know the results as soon as we get them back. The consent forms are bright yellow and you will be able to find them in your child’s sign in and out binder on September 4, 2018.

Reading Program/Homework

Reading Program/Homework  is meant to be a positive experience for your childIts not mandatory to do the homework. The program was created for a social emotional development experience. Setting aside a specific time daily for your children reduces behavioral issues in the long run. We are just giving parents some activities to do during this time.  Please set aside a 20-30 minutes per night for your Prek or Prek2 child  and 10-20 minutes for Intermediates. If your child is refusing to practice writing, there are other alternatives; playdough, legos, setting up the table, folding laundry, helping to wash dishes, or clean off the dinner table. All these activities use their small motor skills and they are still building their muscles in their fingers. The book does not need to be read per verbatim. Have your child try and guess what is happening in the book. If your children want to talk with you about something this is also a good time to do so. Let us know if you are needing support.

Prek2 Uniforms

Our Prek2 class will be switching to uniforms starting August 20, 2018. Uniforms can be purchased from the website below:

The bottoms can be purchased at Walmart, Target, or Durablewear uniforms and must be either navy blue or khaki. The tops must be purchased from Queensboro uniforms and can be light blue, hunter green, or burgundy. You can have items shipped here to avoid shipping charges. We have some leftover stock in the office for purchase if you are interested. All students are required to wear uniforms in the Prek2 classroom Monday through Thursday. On Friday they get a free dress day.

Family Supportive Housing

On Friday, July 13, 2018 we started our collection of donated items for the families trying to recover from crisis to self-sufficiency. We would like to thank all the parents and students who helped donate items!

Our students at this age are building character education skills. Our goal is to instill values for our students that puts others before themselves. Helping others encourages intrinsic motivation in our students. This is the type of motivation that encourages our students to do well in society in the future. They tend to choose jobs that support the society they live in. We are building productive members of society.

Earth Day Celebration April 2018
Students at Merryhill Preschool in Milpitas recently celebrated Earth Day by making paper and cards out of recycled materials. Through the project, students learned how to supplement the school’s recycling efforts by reusing materials around them to create something new. To make sheets of paper, students soaked shredded egg cartons, cardboard, newspaper and other recycled paper products in water to create a pulp. They then strained the pulp, added dried leaves and let it dry. The students used the paper to create Earth Day cards and other art projects. Merryhill Preschool teaches the importance of community and exploring nature at a young age.

Operation Christmas Child 2017

Students at Merryhill Preschool in Milpitas Pack More than 100 Gift Boxes to Send to Children in Need Around the World

Pre-K students assembled boxes with donated gifts to benefit children around the world, including those affected by recent natural disasters MILPITAS, Calif. (Dec. XX, 2017) – Pre-K students at Merryhill Preschool on Corning Avenue in Milpitas recently exceeded their goal of packing and preparing 100 gift boxes of toys, art supplies, books and more to send to children around the world, including those who have been affected by recent natural disasters. Each package also contains handwritten letters from the students. The supplies and gifts were collected as part of a school-wide gift drive to benefit Operation Christmas Child, an international humanitarian organization that sends care packages to children in need around the globe. Prior to preparing the boxes, students learned about friendship, different languages and compassion.

Earth Day Celebration 2017

For Earth Day our students focused on sustainability and were challenged to find a fruit or a vegetable that they could re-grow. Our Students took the challenge and tried to regrow carrots, onions, tomatoes, celery, and sweet potatoes. They were also to create a planter box to replant the fruit or vegetable made out of recycled materials. The Intermediate1 used half gallons of milk cartons, the Intermediates2 used water bottles, and the Prek2 used legos. They all made their own vertical gardens that are hanging in the back yard.

They have been documenting to report their findings to the media. We will let you know as soon as their post comes up. Here are some pictures.

Students planted fruits and vegetables after discovering that plastic terrariums are best for growing plants and conserving water

http://www.mercurynews.com/2016/05/09/milpitas-merryhills-preschoolers-learn-to-conserve-on-earth-day/

MILPITAS, Calif. – On April 22, students at Merryhill Preschool on Corning Avenue in Milpitas celebrated Earth Day by planting a garden of fruits and vegetables using a gardening method that conserves water. Leading up to Earth Day, students tested which environment – soil, sand or a plastic terrarium – uses less water to grow plants. For 20 days, they watched seeds sprout and measured plant growth and the amount of water used. Students learned that the terrarium, which was made from a plastic bottle with cloth, was the most effective as it re-used water from condensation within the bottle. On Earth Day, students planted more seeds in homemade terrariums for the school’s garden. Merryhill Preschool teaches the importance of community and exploring nature at a young age.

Following the event, students donated the bin full of food to the organization, which will benefit members of the community.

Second Harvest Food Bank of Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties has become one of the largest food banks in the nation, providing food to nearly a quarter of a million people each month. The Food Bank mobilizes individuals, companies and community partners to connect people to the nutritious food they need.
