Ms. Cristina Castro - Fourth Grade

My name is Cristina Castro and this will be my 9th year teaching, and my second year teaching at Merryhill Midtown. Prior to teaching at Merryhill, I taught four years of first grade and three years of kindergarten. I received my B.S. in Elementary Education, and received my Masters in Educational Administration from Shasta College in 2020.

The focus of my classroom is to learn and practice 21st century skills and provide an environment of community where the students can become high-level thinkers and life-long learners.

Technology is integrated throughout our school day as we use both the 1:1 iPads and our classroom Mac Mini.  Research, iMovies, peer sharing through airdrop, as well as use of a variety of apps are conducted on our iPads.

In Language Arts, students will be introduced and read from various genres including non-fiction/informational text and historical fiction in all subject areas. These literature studies will be linked to universal themes and focuses within the classroom. Novel studies are used to practice and dive deeper into comprehension skills such as comparing and contrasting and synthesizing by creating original insights, perspectives, and understandings through reflection on texts as well as connections to the real world, other texts and their own backgrounds.

Students will use our Writer’s Workshop block to go through the writing process, which will be integrated throughout all core subjects.

Social Studies is comprised of learning about different aspects of California History . The first months of school we will focus on geography, various regions of California, and Indigenous people native to California,

Throughout 4th grade math, we will continue to develop and apply their knowledge of place value, multiplication, division, and fractions.

In Science,  the first months of school we will be researching animals/plants in relations to their structure and behavior.  We will then be moving on to the changes over time of the Earth’s surface and its resources.
