October 2016 Newsletter

Dear Parents,

Each year our students complete a “Giving Without Walls” project.  We are offering all our students a “JEAN DAY” on the last Friday of each month for a donation of $1.00.  Each month a different grade level will receive the donation dollars to support their “Giving Without Walls” project.  Our Second Graders kicked off this first “JEAN DAY” on Friday, September 30th.  The Second Grade will use your donation to support their class project, “Giving Animals a Voice” and their earnings will go to a local animal shelter.  Please remember that participation in “JEAN DAY” is optional but we do hope everyone will enjoy “Jean Day” while helping their classmates with their support.

We want to thank all our families who joined us for our annual movie night.  I hope everyone enjoyed the treats and the time to socialize.  That is what our family nights are all about, a chance to bring our school family together and get to know each other a little better.  Be watching for a flyer from the PTO for our next family get together on October 21st, Trunk or Treat. I send a special thank you to our PTO who sponsors our family nights and work tirelessly just to hear the laughter and see the joy in our children’s faces.  It is that laughter and joy that brings me to school each day with a smile on my face.

On September 29th we held our first monthly Character Counts Awards Assembly. Character traits are all the aspects of a person’s behavior and attitudes that make up that person’s personality.  Everyone has character traits, good and bad.  At Merryhill we focus on the “good traits”. This month our focus has been on Responsibility – a person of character meets the demands of duty, is accountable, pursues excellence, and exercises self-control.  Each month we will focus on a different trait which is always posted on the bulletin board in the main office building.  Every staff member may award students a “character paw” posted on this board and at the end of the month the child’s classroom teacher will select the student to be honored at the monthly assembly.  We also take advantage at this assembly to celebrate those students who had made the most academic progress that month and they too receive a medal for their hard work. Parents of the students who will be receiving an award are called a few days in advance to attend this assembly to honor their child.  We ask that you keep it a secret as we love to surprise our students and this adds a little extra suspense to this event.

It is a privilege to work with your children.  I learn from them.  I love to see their excitement for learning and share in their joy as they meet new challenges each day. Please know my door is always open to you or feel free to call anytime.

Sincerely,

Theresa Gotay, Principal
