From the Head of School

Michelle Bechtel

Dear Future Merryhill Family,

Throughout our years, we have continually evaluated our mission. Yes, we want children to read well, understand math, converse in Spanish, and go on to strong high schools; however, when I talk to families, I can always them my biggest goal is to put good humans into the world — leaders who know how to be part of a community and take care of others. That is truly what drives everything we do.

Merryhill School in Arlington has been open since 1988, and the brand has existed since 1949. Staff members who grew up as students here have come back to teach. Parents who attended as children have enrolled their own kids. My administration team has been here long enough that when a family walks through the door in kindergarten, they can count on seeing the same faces at eighth grade graduation. That kind of continuity is not something you manufacture; it happens because people genuinely want to stay.

In the classroom, we work hard to make sure no child has to be the squeaky wheel to be noticed. Our teachers design instruction so that a student’s strengths and struggles are tracked individually, not averaged into the class. With all teachers being Apple certified, as well as having three Apple certified coaches on staff, the technology that makes that possible is built into how we teach, not added on top of it. A child who needs more time on one skill gets it. A child who is ready to go further goes further. We hold weekly professional learning sessions not as a requirement to check off, but because we believe teachers grow the same way students do.

We also know that learning reaches deeper when it happens somewhere real. Our students visit Washington D.C., Philadelphia, Williamsburg, Houston, and Austin on overnight trips that push them to be independent in ways a classroom cannot replicate. Standing at the Liberty Bell is just different from looking at a photograph of it.

Outside of academics, we build a community that parents describe as family — and I have heard that word enough times to know they mean it. Mother-daughter teas, father-son cookouts, grade-level socials, service projects that connect students to the neighborhoods around us are just a few of our many family events. Events where, as one parent put it, you find your parent friends. When families visit our campus — 25,000 square feet across two buildings, five playgrounds, a soccer field, a gymnasium, and a STEAM lab — what most of them notice is not the square footage, it is that everyone seems to know everyone else’s name.

I would love for you to come see it for yourself. Call or email us to schedule a tour.

Sincerely,
Michelle Bechtel
Head of School
