Ms. Jessica Marcus - Fifth Grade

Welcome to Fifth Grade!

My name is Jessica Marcus and this will be my 8th year teaching, but my first year teaching at Merryhill Midtown. Prior to teaching at Merryhill, I taught 6/7th grade in Maryland. I received my B.S. in Mid-Level Education, Grades 4-8, with a concentration in Language Arts from Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania.

The focus of my classroom is to learn and practice 21st century skills and provide an environment of community where the students can become high-level thinkers and life-long learners.

Technology is integrated throughout our school day as we use both the 1:1 iPads and our classroom Apple TV.  Research, iMovies, peer sharing through Airdrop, as well as use of a variety of apps are conducted on our iPads.

In Language Arts, students will be introduced and read from various genres including non-fiction/informational text and historical fiction in all subject areas. These literature studies will be linked to universal themes and focuses within the classroom. Literature circles are used to practice and dive deeper into comprehension skills such as comparing and contrasting and synthesizing by creating original insights, perspectives, and understandings through reflection on texts as well as connections to the real world, other texts and their own backgrounds.

Students will use our Writer’s Workshop block to go through the writing process, which will be integrated throughout all core subjects. They will also utilize their iPads to draft and edit their writing.

Social Studies is comprised of learning about different aspects of United States History. We focus on geography, then Native American Indians, explorers, and finish with the birth of the United States.

Throughout 5th grade math, we will continue to develop and apply their knowledge of fractions and decimals, geometry and the beginning of algebra in preparation for 6th grade.  Real world problem solving will be integrated into each math unit to enhance student understanding.

In Science,  the first part of the year we focus on Physical Science with molecules and matter. Our focus then turns to Earth Science where we review the water cycle, and planetary studies. We then conclude the year with Life Science, focusing on the Human Body systems and plant and animal life.
