Mrs. Jordan Smith - Director of Admissions

Hello, I am Mrs. Smith. I have been teaching for the past eight years and am currently earning my master’s in education. Having fun while learning is extremely important to me because it is my desire for my student to be lifelong learners.

The focus of my classroom is to learn and practice 21st century skills and provide an environment of community where the students can become high-level thinkers.

History

Fourth-grade has an exciting focus on California and its history. We learn about the four regions of California, our Native Americans, the Gold Rush, and how California became the diverse and amazing state it is.

Math

In math, it is very important that your student has their multiplication facts mastered to feel successful throughout their fourth-grade. To help our students confidently master their multiplication and division facts, we use an app called “Xtra Math” which supports students memorization of the facts. At the beginning of the year, students review addition and subtraction multi-digit numbers. Next, we move into multiplying and dividing double-digit numbers. The students learn three different methods of how to multiply and divide, this allows them to choose which method works best for their way of learning. By the end of the year, your student should be able to confidently understand the parts of fractions and should be able to add and subtract fractions, as well as, convert mixed numbers and improper fractions.

Writing

We tackle 3 different kinds of writing – Informational, Narrative, and Persuasive. Each trimester we focus on one category of writing. The students will choose a topic and write about whatever interests them to make this process more exciting! We use step-by-step directions for the students to follow and produce an exquisite essay by the end of the semester. I am always so pleased with how hard the students work on these essays, and I believe you will be too.

Science

Fourth-grade science starts off with the study of rocks, volcanoes, and the different landforms. We move towards erosion and earthquakes and by the end of the year our focus is on electric currents and circuits. Science in fourth-grade is very hands on, so be ready to explore the wonders of the world!
