Embracing diversity is a social skill that will help our students in the long run when traveling or building friendships. We would like to thank all the parents who came to our Special Thanksgiving Dinner prepared by our students.   We had spaghetti, salad, fruit salad, dessert, and bread. The classrooms all worked together to prepare the meal.

Christmas in the Park Hunt

Address191-199 S Market St, San Jose, CA 95113

This year our staff decorated a tree at Christmas in the Park in downtown San Jose, CA. We decorated it with our Merryhill School spirit colors. We are challenging our students to go down to Christmas in the Park and find our tree. We will give you one clue. Our tree is next to our Merryhill Elementary Yosemite Tree. Snap a picture of your child next to our Merryhill School Corning Tree and email it to me at lucy.nunez@nlcinc.com. I will do a raffle with all the pictures I receive. The prize will be a $50 giftcard to Toys R Us. Happy Hunting!

CLUE: This is our Merryhill Elementary Yosemite Tree. Our tree is next to this tree. Snap a picture of your child next to our tree.

Lil’ Shopper’s Shoppe

This year we are doing something a little different for our students. We will be teaching our students the value of money and buying a gift off a shopping list. We will be setting up a Lil’ Shopper’s Shoppe in the dramatic play area for our students to shop during a specific time designated to their class. We will be starting this on Dec 6 until Dec 13. Please look out for a flyer and a shopping list that will go home on Monday, Dec 4 with your child. You can send money with your child or purchase a gift certificate online that can be used the same as cash. We ask that all money or certificates be put in the tuition box along with the shopping list OR to the office. Happy Shopping!

Employee Stocking Contest

We will be having an Employee Stocking Contest. Parents and students will get to vote for their favorite stocking from  December 8 through December 15, 2017. Put (1) small stocking stuffer in the stocking of your choice with your child’s name on it. The stocking with the most stocking stuffers will win a $40 gift card. Support your teachers today!

Teachers Christmas Wish List

Parents have been asking me if our teacher’s have a wish list for Christmas. I will email out those shortly on a pdf. file via tadpoles. Thank you so much for considering our teachers who work very hard and diligently all year to support your children’s education. We are very touched by this gesture.

Operation Christmas Child

Every year our students talk about hunger and basic needs awareness. Our students collect basic needs items such as socks, shoes, clothing, toys, educational supplies, and etc. for a child in the same age group as themselves. They sort all the items during a “Packing Party” and pack enough to fill a shoebox for their international friends overseas. This year we collected 107 boxes. A special thank you to Mr. Jesse Arellano for offering to support our students during the packing party.

Here are some pictures of our packing party. We will let you know when it comes out on the news media.

Special recognition to our friends below, Victor and Dominic. Victor donated toys that were given to him by his parents. He INSISTED that he wanted to donate them to his friends.  Talk about true compassion that is instilled in a three year old at a VERY young age. Dominic donated a bag full of toys. It was some awesome as he looked like a little Santa Claus when he walked in.

We will be tracking two boxes. They will let us know when the children receive the boxes and send video to us of the children opening the boxes.

Report cards

We will start passing out report cards this month in December. We will start passing out the Beginners first, then Intermediate, then Prek last. If you have any questions please let us know.

If your child does not need a conference it will be written on the report card. We will only be doing conferences for those students who need support or parents who need support. Otherwise we would have to close down the school to have a conference for all students.

MERRYHILL IN THE NEWS

Earth Day Celebration

For Earth Day our students focused on sustainability and were challenged to find a fruit or a vegetable that they could re-grow. Our Students took the challenge and tried to regrow carrots, onions, tomatoes, celery, and sweet potatoes. They were also to create a planter box to replant the fruit or vegetable made out of recycled materials. The Intermediate1 used half gallons of milk cartons, the Intermediates2 used water bottles, and the Prek2 used legos. They all made their own vertical gardens that are hanging in the back yard.

They have been documenting to report their findings to the media. We will let you know as soon as their post comes up. Here are some pictures.

Students planted fruits and vegetables after discovering that plastic terrariums are best for growing plants and conserving water

http://www.mercurynews.com/2016/05/09/milpitas-merryhills-preschoolers-learn-to-conserve-on-earth-day/

MILPITAS, Calif. (April XX, 2016) – On April 22, students at Merryhill Preschool on Corning Avenue in Milpitas celebrated Earth Day by planting a garden of fruits and vegetables using a gardening method that conserves water. Leading up to Earth Day, students tested which environment – soil, sand or a plastic terrarium – uses less water to grow plants. For 20 days, they watched seeds sprout and measured plant growth and the amount of water used. Students learned that the terrarium, which was made from a plastic bottle with cloth, was the most effective as it re-used water from condensation within the bottle. On Earth Day, students planted more seeds in homemade terrariums for the school’s garden. Merryhill Preschool teaches the importance of community and exploring nature at a young age.

Merryhill donate to Second Harvest Food Bank

MILPITAS, Calif. (FEB. 1, 2016) – Pre-kindergarten students at Merryhill Preschool in Milpitas donated non-perishable food items to benefit the Second Harvest Food Bank. The students learned about hunger awareness and what kinds of items were appropriate to donate through story time with the Second Harvest Food Bank turkey mascot. Following the event, students donated the bin full of food to the organization, which will benefit members of the community.

Second Harvest Food Bank of Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties has become one of the largest food banks in the nation, providing food to nearly a quarter of a million people each month. The Food Bank mobilizes individuals, companies and community partners to connect people to the nutritious food they need.
